The Thermal Identification Friend or Foe (TIFF) Beacon is an advanced long-range identification and observation device intended to aid combatants in distinguishing between friendly, enemy And neutral forces. It is an omni-directional infrared emitter which operates outside the visible or near infrared region of the spectrum. The TIFF Beacon is designed to be seen with a 3-5 µ or 8-20 µ thermal imaging device, but not with standard night-vision detection equipment. It has an operational recognition range of 6 miles (10 kilometers).
